Pere Marquette River Report

Pere Marquette river
The Pere Marquette river near Baldwin, Michigan is home to the "flies only-catch and release" section of the Pere Marquette river, and getting the most attention this early summer from the fly fisher. Although nearly the entire river system has good trout fishing, it's certainly best to follow the hatches up and down the river, as well as play the "weather/water" game with mother nature. Early season will find various species of flies hatching from near Baldwin, down to Walhalla, which is off US 10 between Baldwin and Ludington.
With good rains, will come a quick rise in water levels and a great opportunity for streamer fishing.
When water levels drop and clear, nymph fishing with floating line and indicator will produce fish.
The hatches are what draw most to the river with a fly rod, and the Pere Marquette is home to many good hatches throughout the summer. Some would include early march browns, caddis, followed by sulphurs, then drakes and finally the grand daddy.....the Hexagenia, a.k.a. the "hex". Other hatches certainly occur throughout the summer and bring trout to the surface, these are jus a number of the more significant insects that emerge from the Pere Marquette river for the dry fly fisherman.
Late summer has found many more anglers venturing out at night with a heavier rod and a big 'ol mouse pattern on in pursuit of trophy brown trout.
Certainly call or email with any questions.
