Manistee River Report
Manistee River Report

Upper Manistee - The upper Manistee river is fishing good for trout in search of both early season dry flies and streamer patterns. Conditions of the day often dictate which technique is chosen, however we're on the front end of significant hatches on the upper Manistee right now and dry fly action should reign for the next few weeks.
Given a good shot of rain though, the river will rise in water level and gain a bit of "tint" to the water color, perfect for casting streamers.
The famous "Hex" hatch is just around the corner, but not before its smaller mayfly cousins have a chance to emerge over the next couple weeks.
Lower Manistee - below Tippy dam - The lower Manistee river is fishing good for trout and the last of the dropback steelhead that are still in the system. Per typical of a tailwater fishery, it has good hatches below the dam in early summer. Caddis and soon various mayfly activity will provide the dry fly fisher with good surface action. Another great option is swinging soft hackle fly patterns behind gravel bars or at the drop offs of them.
