Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – November 29, 2015

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is presently running well above average flows for late November due to the heavy rains that came through Michigan the last couple days.  The initial water releases out of Croton dam took the river up to over 5,000 cfs flows, but it has since settled a bit and is running just over 4,000 cfs.  This is GOOD news for the rest of our fall and early winter Steelhead season, which will go up through the holidays and into the New Year.

Andrew, from IN……nice “chrome” Peacock !

We are catching Steelhead on both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment.  In fact, some of our “rigs” for both techniques are very similar, it’s just a different way of presenting our “offerings”.  Resident Rainbow and Brown trout are being caught as well and we’ve seen some really nice Brown trout come to net over the last couple weeks.

Most of our outings as of late have been in/around the Newaygo area, with the occasional run down  river to fish water a bit closer to Muskegon itself.  With the influx of new water though, this should prompt Steelhead to come up river more -vs- hang in the lower 1/3 of the system, as they’ve done in years past.

Present water temperature in the low to mid 40’s…..pretty good for fast approaching the month of December.
