Gift Certificates and Seasonal Specials
A gift certificate for a all inclusive, guided river fishing trip is a great way to show someone you care. These are common for Father’s Day, birthdays, graduation, Christmas and as a retirement present, just to name a few. Whether it’s fly fishing or light spin tackle, first time angler or life long fly fisher, we can tailor a trip that’s just right for whoever receives this wonderful gift. Regardless of age or level of experience, we’ve been helping people enjoy the wonders of the outdoors and fishing for over 2 decades.
Fall begins in late August/early September chasing migratory Chinook salmon on the lower stretches of the Pere Marquette river, east of Ludington. As we get into mid-late September, we may mix it up between the Pere Marquette and the Manistee rivers, based on which is fishing better. With both a drift boat for smaller rivers and a jet sled for bigger water, we have the vessels, equipment and versatility to get into the best fishing.
October brings a change of rivers and scenery as we switch to the Muskegon river for the rest of fall and early winter, fishing for Chinook salmon to begin with, but quick to switch to the “crown jewel” of great lakes big game fish in mid October, the Steelhead ! We fish for Steelhead up to and through the Christmas-New Year holidays, as the Muskegon river has the longest fall steelhead season of any river in the Midwest.
Winter is a tranquil time on the river and when conditions allow, provide some very good fishing for both holdover Steelhead, as well as resident Rainbow and Brown trout. January and February are the coldest months in west Michigan, but can still provide some quality fishing…..”there is no such thing as bad weather, it’s bad clothing choices.”
As spring arrives in early to mid March, we see our first good surge of Steelhead fresh out of lake Michigan, entering their natal river for their annual spawning run. We fish Steelhead through mid-late May in/around the Newaygo, MI area on the Muskegon river. We start early in the morning for steelhead, often launching shortly after first light and fish them until mid day.
Early summer is a great time for insect hatches and dry fly fishing opportunities on the Muskegon river. With BIG hatches of Caddis, Sulphurs, BWO’s, Gray Drakes and Isonychia’s, we focus on these hatches, flights and spinner falls to provide quality dry fly action for the fly fishing enthusiast. Most major hatches occur mid to late afternoon and some go right into dusk, so most of these outings are afternoon – evening trips.
Mid to late summer is when Smallmouth bass fishing kicks into high gear and these willing biters and scrappy fighters make for a great day on the water. There is nothing quite like seeing a “smally” swim up to your topwater “popper” and suck it in, or swim 5 feet or more to chase down a streamer fly or lure. Not to be left out, but not what we may “target” on any given day, are both Northern Pike and Walleye. They will occupy some of the same water as Smallmouth, so it’s not a surprise to see one on the end of your line every now and then. Most trips focusing on warm water fish are mid day to late afternoon/early evening.
As the dog days of summer come to a close, we’re quick to re-focus on the return of salmon to our rivers in west Michigan and the year long cycle begins again.
Trip information & Equipment
With all inclusive guided fishing trips, Jeff will provide all equipment for fly fishing or light spin tackle, all lines, lures, flies, etc., as well as soft beverages. Full day outings include a grilled shore lunch/dinner as well. Half day trips do not include a meal, but everything else. Not provided are a valid Michigan fishing license, appropriate apparel and protective eye wear. We strongly recommend glasses of some kind, regardless of quality or if they’re polarized or not. Some of the fish we pursue can be very aggressive during the “fight” and can throw the hook, so eye protection is required.
All guided trips come with a choice of using fly fishing or light spin tackle. One time frame of the year where this option is not really a choice, is early summer trout fishing where we’re focused on insect hatches and dry fly fishing opportunities.
We use top quality fly fishing equipment for companies such as Orvis, Redington, Rio, Sage, Temple Fork Outfitters and Mystic Outdoors.
Our light spin tackle equipment comes from such companies as Raven, Daiwa, Pflueger, Shimano, Temple Fork Outfitters, Berkley and Abu Garcia.
